If you are like me, you enjoy sitting in front of an open fireplace, it’s a link to countless generations that have come before.

But there’s a BIG problem with using a fireplace…

…improperly sealed dampers.

You wouldn’t have a door without weatherstripping — so why have a damper with a metal to metal seal?

We had one of those dampers in our fireplace.

Sitting and watching TV there was a cold draft on the floor making the room uncomfortable.

Most of the time the fireplace is not being used and the damper is closed.

Studies have shown that a new damper can leak up to $200 of your energy dollars per year. Imagine what a old corroded and warped damper is costing you.

I discovered the Lyemance Top Seal Chimney Cap Damper 13×13.

The damper has a gasket that seals it shut just like a well fitting storm door and it is fixed to the top of the chimney with silicone cement.
It is operated by a stainless steel cable that runs down the flue to a latch that is installed on the side of the firebox.
Since the damper is at the top of the chimney it keeps the weather and our furry friends out of the chimney. The hardest part of the installation was getting the ladder out. It took about 45 minutes from start to finish, there was snow on the roof afterall.

The results were immediate, the draft is gone, the room is warm and comfortable and my wallet a bit thicker.

The most difficult day of the month for many of us is the day we pay our bills and what hurts the most are those power bills.

In this article, we will share some key tips to help you to reduce that enormous power bill.

Discuss with family members the importance of saving electricity. You can reward them a treat if their participation leads to savings. Suggest tips like switching off the lights when they are leaving a room.

Invest smartly on power. Replace all the incandescent bulbs present in the house with compact fluorescent light or CFL bulbs. These bulbs consume less electricity as they consume less power.

Buy the energy saver gadgets that are available in the market. Such gadgets will monitor the intake of the entire power supply in your house and makes you take decision on how to control the usage.

Avoid using those items that consume lots of power -

  • The washing machine should be used only when there is a full load.
  • The geyser should not be kept on for maximum amount of time.
  • Set your thermostat at minimum high or low temperature, i.e. not above 72 in winter and not below 75 in summer. Turn your thermostat down at night and grab an extra blanket!
  • Switch off the computer monitor when not in use. It consumes huge amounts of power and it just takes a second to turn it on again.

Power Save 1200Power Factor is a measure of how efficiently electrical power is consumed.

The ideal Power Factor is unity or one. Resistive loads such as a toaster or baseboard electric heaters convert the electric power to heat. Here voltage and current are in phase. These loads do not affect Power Factor.

Most electrical equipment such as motors, compressors, transformers and even switch start fluorescent lighting, are what is known as inductive loads on the supply.  These loads convert electricity into magnetism which unfortunately is necessary for motors and other inductive loads to operate. The magnetic fields cause current to lag voltage, the extra current  drawn to overcome these magnetic fields is called Reactive Power. The more Reactive Power there is the lower the Power Factor.

Power Factor Correction is the term given to a technology  used to restore Power Factor to as close to 1 or  unity as is possible.

This is normally achieved by the addition of capacitors to the electrical network, which compensate for the Reactive Power demand of the inductive load and thus reduce the load on the supply.

I installed a Power Save 1200 to my panel. Installation is simple. You need to install a double pole 20amp breaker. The Power Save simply wires into the breaker. My power factor is now .98
